I’m really enjoying my stay in Oxford so far. I’m staying at
a Youth Hostel, which was really a last resort because of all the horror
stories I had heard before leaving the States. But as the saying goes, “beggars
can’t be choosers”, and I would definitely fit the beggar situation due to my
current lack of funds. Surprisingly though, I’ve really enjoyed the environment
this hostel provides – the people are all in my age range, and everyone is
pretty nice. But they also have pretty much left me to myself (which I really
appreciate at this point), and as far as I know nothing has been stolen at this
point!
In terms of activity, yesterday was a full one as well! The
day started off with a visit to Regents Park College, where I had a meeting
with the Dean there.
Then I took a tour of the city by bus. Again, the history is
incredible. “On your right hand side, you can see the exact ground where the
house stood which housed ________ and
________, both of whom signed the Magna Carta.” Every sentence of the
tour guide was like that. Ridiculous.
After that, I went out to eat at The Turf Tavern for lunch,
followed by a trip to Blackwell’s and the Museum of the History of Science,
where I found this among other things:
This is the blackboard used by Einstein when he visited Oxford to explain his Theory of Relativity! |
Finally, I got a walking tour of the different colleges of
the university, where I got to see things such as this bust of JRR Tolkein at his alma mater, and the Bodleian Library. This trip has definitely been one of the highlights of my
internship.
